The never sleeping city, one of the places in Earth where people spend more time in a hurry than relaxed. A place where the “to go” is a way of living and not a choice. The place where a flat is no longer a home, but a sleeping and charging pod. New York.
Born as a competition project, its goal was about understanding the complexity of living in the Big Apple while testing the limits of design.
The parcel was 24 m in length with only 8 m of façade, and it was surrounded by 5 stories high buildings. These constraints called for ways to introduce the maximum light while meeting the needs of a hectic city. To maximize the views, the building bends outwards using a steel structural skin. In this manner, an open-air ramp is positioned at its core while apartments are located at the front and back of the building.
In what design is related to, it was clear that structure and form should work together to optimize the space and create a specific architecture, which is the reflection of that way of living. High-strength structural steel, filled with cellular glass, enables the walls to be 10 cm thick, which combined with the chaotic layout of the project, gives the inhabitants the real feeling of living inside an origami model, which depicts their unique society.
